Out-A-Bout (iOS)

Out-A-Bout is a literacy app that encourages outdoor play and parent-child interaction.

  • Out-A-Bout is intended for outdoor play. Ask your child, "what is one of your favorite outdoor places? Why is that your favorite place?" If possible, take your child to your favorite outdoor location (local park, etc).
  • Have your child use their imagination to perform actions that help tell a story. Provide suggestions and encouragements. For example, "act like a monkey" or "do a silly dance!" Using your phone, take pictures of your child acting out the different scenarios.
  • Email the story to yourself when done. You can print it out and read it again later. Ask your child, "can you read me the story?" Don't worry if they get the words right, let them use their own words to tell you the story.

By creating and reading stories with your child, she learns that stories have a structure: a beginning, middle, and end. She also learns how to make predictions about what is going to happen. By putting the child within the story, you are helping to make your child excited about reading.
